How much time do you have during your service?

The most ideal time will be at the very end of the service. This is an effective time … because it’s fresh on people’s minds as they’re leaving. If you have to present at the beginning of the service, request that your pastor remind people as he closes to visit the sponsorship table.

  1. First, open by sharing some brief thoughts about your sponsorship experience. Make it personal. Connecting it with Scripture will make it even more meaningful.
  2. Then show the video.
  3. Tie it all together by inviting people to come to the sponsorship table to choose their child. You can share more of your story when people come to sign up. Also be sure to bring some letters from your child and their photo.

If you can, try and give your presentation at the end of the service. This is an ideal time … because it’s fresh on people’s minds as they’re leaving. If you can't present at the end, request that your pastor remind people as he closes to visit the sponsorship table.

  1. To begin, share some brief thoughts the importance of child sponsorship. Make it personal. Connecting it with Scripture will make it even more meaningful.
  2. Then you could show the main video.
  3. After the video you can share some specific experiences you’ve had with your sponsored child. Show the letters you’ve received, and anything your child might have written that’s been meaningful to you.
  4. Finally, tie everything up by inviting people to come to the sponsorship table to choose their child. You can share more of your story when people come to sign up. Also be sure to bring some letters from your child and their photo.

To make your Compassion Sunday the most effective as possible, try and give your presentation at the end of the service. This is an ideal time because it’s fresh on people’s minds as they’re leaving. If you have to present at the beginning of the service, request that your pastor remind people as he closes to visit the sponsorship table.

  1. First, open by sharing some brief thoughts the importance of child sponsorship. Make it personal. Connecting it with Scripture will make it even more meaningful.
  2. Then show the video.
  3. After the video is done, share about your sponsored child … their background. You can also share about when and why you made the decision to sponsor them.
  4. You could also share some specific experiences you’ve had with your sponsored child. Show the letters you’ve received, and anything your child might have written that’s been meaningful to you.
  5. You can also share how your life has changed through child sponsorship … and how your family has been changed.
  6. Tie it all together by inviting people to come to the sponsorship table to choose their child. If possible, you can also show the “Exit Video” as you close. This works best at the end of the service.

Some pastors see the overall impact of child sponsorship as so significant, they develop a full service to support Compassion Sunday … from the worship music to the Scripture reading, and even the pastor’s sermon.

Make sure you meet with your pastor or church leader to plan the service together, so you’re sure to share your story and show the video.

Your Compassion Sunday checklist

We want you to have the most successful Compassion Sunday possible. Below are some helpful tips to help guide you as you plan your event.

Pray!
Pray for God to use you as you speak up for children in need. We’re also praying for you.

Talk with your pastor about your presentation.
Find out how much time you’ll have for your presentation, when/how it will fit into the service and how your pastor will participate.

Plan your presentation.
See below for even more resources to help you plan your event.

Review your Compassion Sunday Planning Guide.
You’ll find a suggested outline, relevant Scriptures, helpful hints, the answers to frequently asked questions and more. You can also find these on our resource page.

Talk with your church media staff.
Discuss your audiovisual needs in advance so there will be no technical issues with your video, photos, PowerPoint presentation, etc., on the day of your event. Preview the DVD or other downloadable resources with your media team.

Arrange for a sponsorship table.
Ask your church if they can supply a table. Secure a good location near the entrance to the main sanctuary.

Wear your T-shirt.
Don’t forget to write your sponsored child’s name in the “Ask me about _______” space on your T-shirt.

Set up your sponsorship table.
Use a tablecloth. Suggested colors are white or blue.

  • If possible, hang the poster on the wall behind the table.
  • Set up the tabletop display.
  • Spread the child packets out on the table.
  • Be familiar with the child packets you have available — the ages, countries and gender of the children.
  • Place pens between the packets for easy access.
  • If you have photos or letters from your sponsored child, feel free to display them for prospective sponsors to see.

Pray, relax and get ready.

Give your presentation.

Help people sign up.

  • Go to the sponsorship table immediately following your presentation.
  • Answer questions about the sign-up process, as well as common questions people have about sponsorship.

When someone selects a child to sponsor, have them fill out the form, tear it off and leave it with you. They may take the child packet home with them.

Leave your sponsorship table up.
If you still have boys and girls who need sponsors, ask your pastor for permission to make a brief follow-up announcement the week after your event.

Complete your Compassion Sunday survey form.
Your response is critical to help us know how to better support hosts like you in the coming years.

Return the sponsorship forms and other materials to Compassion.
Use the return envelope and the prepaid FedEx label to send back the completed child sponsorship forms, payments you received and your survey. You can drop it off at any FedEx or arrange for a pickup via fedex.com. You do not need to return unused child packets.
